Hi Anne, thank you for such an insightful comment.
I totally agree that people are projecting their frustration outwards onto particular demographics and certain practises that they can physically see, for lack of the ability to acknowledge the over-arching neoliberal capitalist paradigm in action.
That's why immigrants, homeless individuals, those from the LGBTQ community, and the most vulnerable in the country become easy targets of right-wing politicians and scapegoats for an unravelling society.
I think the first step of "breaking through power" (as Ralph Nader would say) and dismantling a system that has been built for the 1% by the 1% is to make the mechanisms of that power completely transparent, so people can see for themselves how the sausage is actually made.
After that I think we should re-visit the idea of nationalizing banks. If we're forced to live in an economy that runs on debt, then debt should be treated as a public utility and available to everyone at zero interest.
Secondly, re-establishing the Glass-Stegall act, which banned commercial banks from gambling on the market.
And third, breaking up monopolies and re-regulating the market, after 40-50 years of non-stop deregulation.
Most of these steps would just be a form of plastering over a bloody wound, but at least it would be a start towards fostering a more equitable system.....
