I totally agree that you must defend your home etc., and yes, we do not get to choose for Ukrainians, but the sad fact of the matter is that the instant the allies withdraw financial and military support, Russia will win.
The solution seems simple - that Putin should call back the troops - but you have to appreciate what's on the line for him. His entire power-structure is now indelibly entangled with the success of this war and so too is the fate of the Russian elite. Putin cannot just withdraw and be considered a failure, because he will be overthrown and he knows that, and even if he does withdraw, other political elites, who have now been humiliated by the threat of defeat, will continue the war with or without him as a matter of national pride.
I'm beginning to think that the best means to resolve this is to sign an internationally recognized treaty that guarantees Ukrainian security, while also embracing Russia more as a European ally.
