Thanks Natasha. Yes I totally agree: the more you try to suit the readership, the further the standard of your craft declines until you find yourself tempted to write puff pieces about utter bollox, rather than focusing on high quality content.
The worst habit I've gotten into is trying to make posts as short and snappy as possible, when really some subjects do demand a deep-dive in order to fully explore the research and do justice to the topic.
Articles thrown together in a matter of minutes seem to garner more appreciation on Medium than those that take a lot of effort to compose, and that is very frustrating. I've also noticed that dry, simplistic writing on contentious issues, and get-rich-quick schemes, have proliferated immensely since the change of management, and seem to get the most views.
The concept of Medium is great - a shared writers' space - but it does seem to be going the way of most social media companies now, focusing on quantity over quality, and stoking division.
I agree that the space lacks diversity too - it would be really interesting to read more material from writers outside of the Western sphere of influence.
